Games can define a generation. Generations of gamers have been able to thank these titles for inspiring the games that would follow and helped shape the industry into what it is today. And while many of these titles have been lavished with praise and honored without end, there’s one game that deserves the credit all the same. A small, unassuming title that stands by you in your darkest hour, making sure that you’re never alone and able to find comfort when everything seems bleak. I am of course referring to the Google Chrome T-Rex Game.

The gameplay may seem simple but that’s only what’s apparent on the surface. Deep down this is a deep game with countless hours of replayability built upon a very simple concept, the endless runner. A simple tap of the Space bar or your touch screen (if you’re playing on a mobile device) will send your T-Rex leaping into the air, allowing you to avoid obstacles like inconveniently placed cacti and tempestuous pterodactyls. But be warned! One mis-timed jump or missed hop and it’s back to square one with only your top score serving as a reminder of your original quest. Younger gamers might be put off by this unforgiving difficulty which features no rebounding health bars or checkpoints but for us more experienced players, Google Chrome T-Rex Game is a perfect throwback to the ‘good ‘ol’ days of gaming yore.

Admittedly the game is pretty thin in the story department though that only helps build the mythos around why our short-armed friend is running so diligently. Some say there’s not much going on through T-Rexy’s skull, that he’s probably running to go grab some meat for supper or that he’s competing in some sort of prehistoric marathon but a bit of digging has led me to the following conclusions… that Google Chrome T-Rex Game is actually a dream! Oh sure it’s still a T-Rex dreaming (thinking differently would just be silly) but it’s the meaning of the dream that makes the game take on a whole new meaning. Because you see, he’s not running towards something but away. Away from the hardships of the past that haunt his existence and towards a brighter future, one where he’s free to make decisions that he can control. The outcome isn’t important, win or fail, the T-Rex will try again and again to reach his goal. Along the way their will be new challenges. The immovable pillars of life, verdant from a distance but thorny and coarse when viewed up close will inevitably obscure the way forward and force our friend to make decisions that will either lead to him surpassing them or crashing headfirst into life’s prickliest of challenges. It’s clear to me now that Google Chrome T-Rex Game is not some much a video game as it is an expose on life’s harsh realities and what is needed to overcome them.

Visually arresting is how I would describe the look of Google Chrome T-Rex Game. It’s simple design echoes the great minimalist artists of our time and perfectly walks the line between simple graphics and telling a deep story. The graphics though go beyond just showing the plight of the T-Rex but work to emphasize his sheer devotion to his goal. You see, the game features a day / night cycle which inverses the tone of the visuals between white and black, which not only represents the amount of time he’s putting into his quest but represents the duality of his mission. On one hand the light is warm and welcome and offers a sort of comfort the night misses but also represents complacency, something that is akin to torture for our T-Rex friend. The night on the other hand is the manifestation of danger, intrigue and adventure – a brave new frontier that needs to be explored even if it leads to failure.

Google Chrome T-Rex Game is a free title that comes packed in with every download of Google’s Chrome web browser and as such as the potential to be one of the most widely distributed games of all time. But of course the real hook is how you access the game because you see, unlike most modern AAA games you actually have to turn off your internet in order to experience this one. Keeping in line with the game’s strong, introspective themes, this was designed as a way to encourage players to sever the ties between themselves and the world-wide web and experience a true narrative that you can make your own judgements on without being subject to the ever-present and corrosive voices of the online masses. This type of critiquing of our ever-connected world is not something that videogames often tackle, being dependent on the internet themselves for survival so I applaud Google Chrome T-Rex Game for taking such a brave stance on the issue.

It takes a very special type of game to be called a ‘masterpiece’. All the pieces have to come together flawlessly to make a unified whole that is seamless despite it’s split origins. Well Google Chrome T-Rex Game is one such game. The gameplay is sublime, the narrative thought-provoking, the visuals are a wonder to behold and not only is it available free of charge but actually gives you back something that you may have lost. Perfection is an elusive thing in this industry, what is great one day will soon be forgotten as gamers move on to the next big thing but Google Chrome T-Rex Game transcends all this and delivers an experience that touches the soul of gaming. There is no doubt about it, this game is perfect.
